If you want to create an online store using Shopify, you’re on the right page. Keep reading, I’ll show you how you can easily create and customize your business webstore.

Ready? Let’s get started…

I’ve broken down the procedure from start to finish into 7 basic steps:

1. Registering an account with Shopify
2. Setting up your store
3. Choosing a store theme
4. Personalizing your online store
5. Adding products
6. Prepare to Go ‘live’
7. Adding a domain name

Registering an account with Shopify

This is the preliminary step. Before you can do anything on Shopify, you need to create an account on their platform. Visit www.Shopify.com. Click on sign up, create an account, and click on the ‘start free trial’ button. The entire process would take up to an hour or more, so take out some time to carefully fill in your details. The name you decide to go with for your store should be unique or Shopify will ask you to select another. This is to protect the brand image of every Shopify store user and ensure every business is unique. You’ll be asked to fill your name, address, country, and contact. You’ll also have to answer some questions about your business like what you want to sell on the platform and whether or not your products already exist. If you just want to try out Shopify to see how the software works, just select “I’m just playing around” and when asked if you have any products click on ”I’m not sure.”
Once you have completely filled the options, click on “I’m done” to continue to the next page.

Setting up the basics of your store

Once you’ve completed the sign-up procedure, the next page that will pop up will be your personalized admin page. Here you’ll see all you need to do to be up and running. From this panel, you can upload your products, set prices for your products, shipping, set up payments, and customize the store.

Choosing a store theme

The next step to take is to choose a suitable theme for your online store. Shopify has an array of templates you can access on its official theme store to further personalize your brand. The amazing part is that each theme is fully customizable and you can do this without having to write a line of code. Although the free themes you can find on Shopify are great, you can unlock more features and modifications with premium themes. If the changes you want to make to your theme are advanced, Shopify has a team of experts they call ‘Shopify Experts’ you can hire to assist you in customizing your online store.

Personalizing your online store

To enable every online store to stand out, Shopify allows users to modify themes and make personalized changes to the overall look of your store.
From the navigation menus on the left side on your admin screen click on ‘themes’. Your current theme will appear on a box and on the top right corner you’ll find two buttons. The first button allows you to make some simple changes to your theme like duplication (highly recommended to revert changes if you don’t like newly made changes). The second button is the ‘customize theme’ which opens a page with multiple functionalities and allows you to edit your theme and try out more features of your site.

Some of the common features you can personalize are:

* Font size & style
* Color schemes
* Designing the number of items on each line of the collection page
* uploading logos
* uploading slides to a homepage carousel
* Equipping related item features to product pages

Adding products

On the left navigation bar select ‘Products’. A blue ‘Add a product’ will drop down on the page, click on this and add all necessary details about your products on the page. Create your product name, description, and add a URL. It’s advisable to consider optimizing your products with SEO for better hits.
Ensure your product descriptions are as informative as possible to inform customers about your items.
You can add your product image on this page as well. Product images are a key part to secure sales, so make sure you show off your products in high quality engaging pictures. To keep your store tidy, ensure you upload your photos in the same dimension. Once you’re done uploading click the ‘Save product’ button in the top and bottom right corners.

Prepare to Go ‘live’

Before you can take the next steps to get your online store live, you need to plan how to make deliveries, how to pay tax and add some details about your company.

Adding a domain name

The final step before your online store can go live is to add a domain name. There are two options open to you. You can purchase a domain from Shopify and it’ll be immediately be added to your store. If you’re a newbie with little knowledge about hosting, this is a great option for you. It will help you save a lot of time and it costs about $9-$14 USD per year to obtain this hosting. Also, you can consider purchasing a domain from a third-party host like GoDaddy, however, you will have to redirect the DNS records yourself which can be a little tasking.

You’re all set to go!

Once your hosting is live, and you’ve completed all the steps I mentioned above, you will have a fully operational online store to sell your products.
